All athletics involve balance and strength. If you do not have these two essential qualities you are starting with a disadvantage. Your core muscles are the most important muscles in your body.  They are: the abdominals, the gluteus, the obliques, the illiopsoas, the erector spinae, as well as the neck and upper back stabilizers. Without strength and symmetry in the core muscles, then the extremity muscles, which include, biceps, triceps, quadriceps, calves, and pectorals are trivial-no matter how well developed they are. The most important factor in performance is the form in which you do it. For instance, in golf, if you do not have the proper stance or mechanics, your swing will suffer. Poor body mechanics will lead to compensation patterns and eventual injury.

The development and symmetry of the core muscles and upper extremity stabilizers are crucial to the performance of the athlete. The development of the upper extremity stabilizers alone can help you avoid a lot of repetitive use shoulder injuries, such as bursitis and tendonitis, as well as protect the shoulder joint and rotator cuff from traumatic injuries. When you have strength in the core muscles, this translates to balance, which allows you to generate more force when using your extremities.

Athletes have a different mindset than most people, pushing their bodies to the limit of exhaustion and performance. Dr. Schragen uses this to the advantage of the patient.  He gives the tools to improve balance and strength, as well as teach the proper body mechanics when exercising.  He will also tailor this program to the specific athletic activity.

At Schragen Chiropractic, you will receive comprehensive evaluation and treatment for all of your athletic injuries or needs. If you feel like you are not performing at your peak ability level, come in and let Dr. Schragen perform a postural and kinetic examination to figure out your weak or over-trained muscles. A treatment plan will then be formulated to address these issues as well as strengthen your core muscles and extremity stabilizers. This treatment plan will not only make you feel better, it will improve your athletic performance.

The Gold Standard in Soft Tissue Treatment

  3. Cumulative Trauma Disorders

How is ART different?

Active Release Techniques (ART) soft tissue management system is so different that it has been granted a medical patent.  In order to become an ART provider, each professional must complete extensive hands on instruction and written/practical testing unparalleled by other soft tissue programs.  An ART provider is trained to palpate and treat more than 300 muscular and fascial injuries and over 100 nerve entrapments, which often cause numbness and tingling.

What is causing the pain?

Soft tissue conditions often do not show up in radiographic studies.  When soft tissue has been injured, or even chronically tight , it forms scar tissue.  While necessary for healing, scar tissue may stick to adjacent structures restricting range of motion and may cause compression over nerves of blood vessels.  This condition alters the texture of soft tissue, which an experienced ART provider can diagnose and treat.

What can be expected from treatment?

Active Release Techniques, as the name implies, uses motion to fix the problem.  Once the injury has been assessed, the provider uses hands on treatment and patient motion to “free up” the problem areas.
Treatment duration and frequency may vary depending on the severity and complexity of the injury.  However, most patients experience rapid recovery.

Who can benefit from ART?

What we hear most is, “ I have had this pain for a long time, and up until now, no one has been able to find the cause.  You found the source of the problem right away.”
This is because no one is trained to palpate these specific conditions like an ART provider.  Seeing an ART provider is like seeing a soft tissue and nerve specialist.  Until now, no such specialist existed.
Since an ART provider is qualified to diagnose and treat over 400 structures, we see a broad range of injuries and conditions.  ART is successful for professional and amateur athletes, people injured in auto accidents or at work, and people who just work hard and hurt.  Symptoms vary from aches and pains, to burning muscles, to numbness and tingling.

What happens when you put stress on your body?

There are 3 major forms of stress that we deal with on our everyday lives:
Bullet Physical - athletics, exercise, yard work, moving, lifting, etc.
Bullet Chemical - food, preservatives, caffeine, environmental, etc.
Bullet Emotional - stress, family, finances, etc.

Systemic effects of chronic stress
Bullet Immune System: infection fighting is decreased; blood flow to the intestines is decreased, leaving the mucous lining vulnerable to ulcers and e-coli.
Bullet Circulatory System: elevated blood pressure and heart rate damage the elasticity of blood vessels which could lead to a heart attack.
Bullet Musculoskeletal: muscle spasm, trigger points, and joint dysfunction result in a decreased range of motion of the spine and extremities. This eventually leads to degenerative joint disease or arthritis.

Almost all the cells in our body have chromophores. These chromophores are like chlorophyll in plants; they absorb light and transform it to adenosine tri-phosphate, also called ATP.  ATP is the basic energy source for all living cells and can be used to create more collagen or reduce inflammation by inducing homeostasis in the damaged cells. The laser light therapy basically supplies the energy to the cells. Cells absorbing light stimulate the metabolic process on the cellular level. The result is that the absorbed energy is used to repair the tissue, reduce pain, and/or restore normalcy to an otherwise impaired biological process.
